#8572 netduino controlled toy car

Posted by bill.french on 27 January 2011 - 06:04 PM in Netduino 2 (and Netduino 1)

...but the second "p" in PPM is "position", right? You're not varying the position of the pulse within the frame to change the servo angle, just the width. I was trying to find a link to back my position, wiki says PWM: http://en.wikipedia....anism#RC_servos and PPM is something else: http://en.wikipedia....tion_modulation .. but there's lots of arduino stuff that says "PWM damages servos" ... but i imagine that's from using the wrong pulse/frame size.

A real Hobby grade ESC will require a PPM wave.

...really? Do you have an example of that. My understanding was that ESCs were no different than servos, as old speed controllers used to be servos. And on gas/nitro vehicles, they still are, as throttle is still servo controlled.

Or am i missing something?

#4393 Where to find these connectors?

Posted by bill.french on 31 October 2010 - 11:36 AM in General Discussion

This is probably not exactly what you're looking for, but maybe? They are Ampmodu connectors, you'll commonly see them as the internal audio connection for a cdrom drive:

-- but they come in lots of different sizes, are keyed, and available from mouser:

mouser catalog page

One disadvantage, possibly, compared to what you posted is the jacks are usually 90 degree to the pcb. Here's an arduino shield with a bunch of the connectors as an example:

#4038 Forum Topic Text Color

Posted by bill.french on 20 October 2010 - 03:49 PM in General Discussion

I highlighted in red examples of what is rather hard for me to read, on pretty much any computer I use, even one with an Apple Cinema display... of course, if the forum is fine for you, the below image probably looks fine, too, and I sound crazy.

I'm fairly young, have healthy eyes, and use decent monitors, but it does annoy me slightly. The rest of the site is very attractive.

#7506 SparkFun LCD Backpack

Posted by bill.french on 12 January 2011 - 11:10 AM in General Discussion

Do you have code you can post, or you're not sure even how to start with code? I'm thinking it is going to work fine w/o 5v ttl -- the "5v tolerant" means the netduino can tolerate 5V *input* -- output is going to be 3.3v. Check out the code attached to this post: http://forums.netdui...ch__1#entry5962 ...it's the best I have for serial communication.

#5145 Ultrasonic Transducer

Posted by bill.french on 21 November 2010 - 09:05 PM in General Discussion

What are you trying to do? This thread I'm sure has lots of good info: http://forums.netdui...ch__1#entry4555 I would guess for motion detection, it's going to be hard to beat something like this for simplicity: http://www.parallax....83/Default.aspx

can you expand on this a bit: 6. Bugfixes: SerialPort.Read() timeout now implemented properly

#5873 Part Suggestions?

Posted by bill.french on 07 December 2010 - 07:55 PM in General Discussion

my first instinct is to google pinball machine replacement parts, they tend to have lots of inexpensive solenoids...

#5874 Part Suggestions?

actually a netduino driven pinball machine would be a pretty cool project!! TO THE LAB!!

#6572 Visual Studio dies after deploy

Posted by bill.french on 27 December 2010 - 02:21 PM in Visual Studio

I had this issue, but it seemed to only be for certain projects. Strangely, simpler ones seemed to die more consistently. The issue for me has gone away, but i'm not sure if it's because my projects have gotten more complex, or the firmware updates. Are you up-to-date on your firmware?

#8469 Noob Motor Shield questions

Posted by bill.french on 26 January 2011 - 04:22 PM in Netduino 2 (and Netduino 1)

hmmm, i have never used either. 1. I see no reason why that shield would not work wiht a netduino, it's just an h-bridge on a board, as far as I can tell. 2. That servo, though, is 4.8-6v, and the shield takes it's power from Vin, which I think requires 7V, so that might be an issue. ...BUT i don't think you need that shield (or an h-bridge) to drive that servo -- the servo should just take in PWM and power.

#7906 Basic question about managing classes

Posted by bill.french on 19 January 2011 - 12:58 PM in Visual Studio

Cool. This may have changed my life forever!

#7876 Basic question about managing classes

Posted by bill.french on 19 January 2011 - 12:26 AM in Visual Studio

Sorry if this is really dumb. Let's say I have a class in a .cs file that I want to use in multiple projects. Is there any easy way to do this so that if I fix a bug in the class while working in one project, all the other projects will get the latest version of the file? Hopefully I'm phrasing this in a way that makes sense!

#4334 How to utilize full range of Analog Input

Posted by bill.french on 29 October 2010 - 12:04 AM in General Discussion

I'd be curious to know how to do this, too. My thoughts: 1. I believe you can use the aref to reduce the ceiling, so if you gave aref 2.2v instead of 3.3v, you could get 0-1023 mapped to 0-2200mV, which is a little better. 2. I don't believe you can raise the floor on the built in ADC... i think you'd need to use a differential adc for that? Or, what about this: (i have no idea if this would work at all) 1. Run j1 through a diode -- i wonder if the .7v drop across the diode would get your output from 1.6-2.2 to .9-1.5v? 2. Feed 1.5v to aref then, your 0-1023 would map to 900mV to 1500mV? IF that works, maybe two diodes? I suspect there's not enough current moving for the diodes to work. This is all wild guessing on my part.

#6361 my netduino made me a steak

Posted by bill.french on 22 December 2010 - 05:20 AM in Project Showcase

The details are in the link on the first sentence of my post, but basically I used a pot with a built in heater, more like a small deep fryer than a crock put, but the same idea.

#6240 my netduino made me a steak

Posted by bill.french on 19 December 2010 - 06:18 AM in Project Showcase

Now that I've got my netduino sous vide functional, i was going to try chicken breasts next, but grabbed a flank steak (sold as 'London Broil' in Shoprite) instead. I cooked it at 135F for about 5 hours. Most recipes call for a slightly lower temperature (130-133 i have seen) and much, much longer times (42 hours, for instance) .. but i am playing it safe temperature wise for now and only had 5 hours to let it cook.

Well, it worked! I did a poor job browning it right before eating it, so the flavor was not nearly as good as it could have been, but it was far and away the least chewy and juiciest steak of this cut I've ever had. I'm going to cook the other half for about 9-10 hours tomorrow and see how it goes. Once I'm a little more comfortable that I am not going to burn the house down I will push the times further.

we used google docs this year, so that edits (mostly additions!) could be made and she would always have the most up-to-date information.

#3813 12V Regulated Power Supply

Posted by bill.french on 13 October 2010 - 01:10 AM in Netduino 2 (and Netduino 1)

Great, thanks for the reply. Am I safe to assume all the grounds on the netduino are the same? And that the Vin is tied directly to the inner pin of the power input? Also, is is safe to have external power and be hooked up to usb for debugging? Thanks!

#3810 12V Regulated Power Supply

Posted by bill.french on 13 October 2010 - 12:19 AM in Netduino 2 (and Netduino 1)

I my quest to solve my analog input issues, I have dug out my somewhat decent "12V" regulated power supply that I have had luck with in the past -- which actually puts out 13.8V. Anyway, the netduino's specs call for 12V, but can it handle 13.8V? It would be good to know for this application as well as automotive applications since most 12V auto systems run around 13.8V, too. Come to think of it, it seems most 12V supplies I have come across put out a bit more than 12V. Thanks!

#7281 MagStripe Reader with Netduino

I was just reading about magstripe readers in a copy of Make magazine. I have no idea if this is relevant, but check this thread out, dealing with interrupt ports and IR: http://forums.netdui...p?showtopic=185

#6480 Interfacing with a USB Flash drive?

Posted by bill.french on 24 December 2010 - 05:10 PM in General Discussion

here's another interesting unit on Amazon, with a 2TB limit:

http://www.amazon.co...3210173&sr=1-16

I'm thinking you could stage a file on the local SD card, then FTP it to the nas device on a background thread.

what kind of data are you storing? what kind of time period are you dealing with? Maybe a compression algorithm? Something like this and a ND+ could get you to 8GB? http://www.addonics....s/nas/nasu2.asp
