The "Building Wireless Sensor Networks" is pretty good. There are also tons and tons of Xbee videos on YouTube which cover all kinds of projects in the Xbee/Arduino(other microcontrollers as well) realm.
DMX is a protocol of multiplexing, typically used in professional (stage, club, DJ, etc) lighting applications. $5 is dirt cheap, assuming it's not somehow restricted down to useless.
