I'm the same as you - C# background (and some electronics) but no microcontroller experience.

Sounds like the Netduino Plus would be ideal for you if you can wait a few weeks for availablility. The Netduino "standard" should be available but has no built-in ethernet. There's no "kit" needed, just the device and then whatever you want to connect it to.

There's a few suppliers. What country are you in?
