why do I need any hardware interface to XBee module

As i realized, Netduino Plus uses 3,3V UART levels, same as XBee modules do. Why do then people recommend using XBee shields or 5v <-> 3,3V boards in some forum threads? Is it possible just to connect Netduino and XBee with wires? Thank you, Roko
