Is there any crafty solutions to prototyping with an smd device? I have a GainSpan GS1011 with 0.05" pitch ... getting it with breakout in the UK envolved waiting and cost ... so i just went for it

I've made a schematic in eagle based on the shield, but single layer and just breaking out the pins ... before i go and try to etch this I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of an adapter or board that would do the job? I've discovered numerous possibles, cheap and expensive ... but not entirely knowing what im dealing with I'm only guessing from photos when there no schematics.

Thanks!

Hi Jamie,

Even with the correct PCB pad layout, it will be a bugger to solder the module to the pads.

There might be some hope with an adapter like this one: http://www.hobbytron...qfp-dip-adapter £2.99 + £2 P&P

I'm not sure the layout of this adapter will work though because the Gainspan module has 14 x 17 pads.

Below is an image of the reverse side of the board:

I have not bought/used one of these adapters myself.

(I am in the UK and I have used Hobbytronics several times now - I have been pleased with them so far.)

Hopefully it will work.
Good Luck!
Paul

Hi Paul, Thanks for the reply, that one looks more promising .. would need to check the spec' again but might be able to get away with it. Yep soldering is going to be almost impossible, especially with my rusty skills ... but I wouldn't be against a bit of super glue if it did the trick ;) However my next idea was to try and find something along the lines 1/2 mm headers if they exist, i could just clamp it down and plug-in! I'll take a look at hobbytronics, I had come across them but don't ever remember to try them ... proto-pic / skpang have been taking all my money. Jamie.

If you are looking for discrete parts then you might find bitsbox handy. I've often found them to be cheaper than most other sites although their range is limited. You're not likely to find shields etc. Shipping is next day of ordered before 1pm and I've always found them reliable.

Hope this helps,
Mark

I could be wrong but I'm coming to the conclusion nothing exists to cater for something this small and I'm not sure a home made PCB is going to cope either ... if I'm reading the data sheet correctly its 0.91mm pads with 0.36mm pitch I reckon its either manufacture a PCB or go all blue peter and break out the super glue.
