I am new to the netduino mini. I recieved the microcontroller a couple of days ago and have yet to been able to connect to it through putty, tera term, or deploy any program through visual studio 2010. I am attempting to connect via a female/female RS232 cable. I cut off the one end of the cable and found through point to point RX(yellow), TX(orange), DTR (Red), and Signal Ground (brown) and connected them to pins 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively on the microcontroller and I plugged the other end directly into the PC. I have 9V on pin 24 and ground on both pins 23. Am I missing something? thanks David

itsDL,
Are you wanting to program it through the serial or would you rather use a USB-TTL cable? you can program it via ttl on pins 11 and 12. to change the programming port to the TTL port, during mini boot hit escape in a terminal program like putty and chose ttl (I believe it is option 2) then use the same com port to program it however you will lose com1 if your debugging.

also quick shameless plug. i have a mini breakout board in production now which makes connecting easy. http://www.synapsesg.com. I am taking pre-orders for a few weeks.
Thanks,
Terry Massey

Hi David,

If you're using a female cable, it's probably a cross-over cable. So you'd reverse TX and RX.

Also, leave DTR detached. It's useful to kick the Netduino into "bootloader mode" but if you drove it high you could keep your Netduino Mini from booting.

Please let me know if swapping RX and TX works for you. We want to make sure you get up and running right away :)

Chris, Thank you and Terry for the reply I am not using TTL, I am plugging directly into the back of the computer and getting the expected 12V swings. I have read that the Netduino Mini can handle this type of communication on pins 1-4. I have attempted reversing TX and RX and still fail to connect to the device. I have disconnected the DTR from the controller and have even attempted grounding the pin. I still can not deploy a program to the netduino via Visual Studio. I have attempted to ping the microcontroller with MFDeploy, but it comes up with the error "No response from the device". If there is crossover, would my signal ground need to be switched as well. I have wired the RS232 Cable to mimick the following. How can i ensure that the device is booted?

ItsDL, First diagnostics step: see if you're getting any data from the Netduino Mini. 1. Grab a copy of HyperTerminal, Putty, or your favorite terminal program. 2. Connect from your PC to the Netduino Mini (115200,N,8,1). 3. Power up your Netduino Mini. Q1: Do you get any data "spewing out" into HyperTerminal, showing that the Mini is booting? Q2: If not, press the ESC key. Do you get any data now? If the answer to Q1 and Q2 is no: 1. The wiring or electrical characteristics of the wiring is wrong. or 2. Your Netduino Mini was somehow erased. You can reflash it, and we can help guide you through that process. or 3. Your Netduino Mini is damaged somehow. If you got it in the last 30 days, we can replace it under warranty. Chris

My wiring ended up being wrong in the RS232, what i thought was DTR was actually RX, thank you for your help.
