I tried to buy a NetDuino development board, but it is currently out of stock at several places I checked.

  • What options do I have for a development board which is more powerful than NetDuino? I would like to stay around USD 75.00.
  • I would like to use the available development tools which are freely available.
  • I use Ubuntu 10.04 Linux as my primary desktop OS and I would like to stay in that environment if possible. I have Oracle's "VirtualBox" with a legal WinXP SP3 installed that I use for some software packages that I can run not directly in Linux.

Thanks!

Yea, I noticed that Makershed is out and Amazon has only one at 89.99! I guess business is good.

Hi Aminga03, Yes, Netduinos have been very popular. Resellers are getting them in, but they're selling out quickly...so please keep checking back. We've ramped up production significantly and anticipate catching up in the next few weeks. MakerSHED has more Netduinos on the way and should be receiving them in just a few days. Additionally, I believe that Proto-Advantage has them in stock (and I believe that their shipping is just a few $ to the USA). Chris

...as far as an upgrade path, we're working on that :)

In the meantime, there are some closed-source implementations available. I'd personally recommend loooking at the Meridian/P Micro Development Kit.

The following page and e-shop lists many of the .NET Micro Framework boards, most of them are included in the comparison table; there is similar table for various FEZ boards. Depending on what exactly you would like to do, there are also other platforms, not based on .NET Micro Framework though, which can be programmed with free development tools, but I guess they are a little bit more expensive. On the other hand, you can convert a ~$50 wireless router into embedded system...

And if you really need a much more powerful device maybe you should take a look at http://beagleboard.org/

Thank you all for excellent suggestions. I would like to start with a simple embedded .NET project to get familiar with embedded development for now and it seems like NETduino is a good starting point with a lot of help out there. My background is hardware (circuit design and board layout) so I want to gain practical knowledge and experience so i can design my add-on boards.
