#57342 Microsoft Build 2014 (and Netduino SDK for Azure)

Posted by roguemat on 04 April 2014 - 10:35 AM in General Discussion

Hi,

great to hear that Microsoft will spend more work in enhancing the .NET MF.

I also like that you guys are working on further improvements for the Netduino-plattform and I could imagine that you get some sponsorship by adding Azure support (you don't need to confirm or deny ;-))

Azure itself is an interesting platform, the reason why I still run my own server is that it's cheaper when you don't just need a plain webserver. For me I need also some more database space, which makes Azure quite expensive very fast - are you maybe also in discussion with Microsoft to provide some IoT/Netduino-pricing which also fits more to the pricing segment of low-cost devices?

Thanks

Personally I think the Azure pricing is pretty great. SQL space is expensive on it, but remember that you are getting enterprise-level stuff, not just a hacked together SQL instance on unreliable hardware. With that in mind, they can only cut prices to a certain extent before they sacrifice quality (which it is pretty obvious that they won't do).

It could almost make sense for them to add a "personal" SQL option for clients who don't need 99.95% uptime SLA etc, but that would just confuse matters IMO.

#57309 Build 2014: Bitcoin + Azure + Traffic Light

Posted by roguemat on 02 April 2014 - 09:10 PM in Project Showcase

Also...from their reaction, the TSA agents apparently didn't expect someone to bring a traffic light onto a plane ;)

Wait, this isn't a normal occurance?! Shameful!

#55681 Windows Phone controlled car with Netduino and Bluetooth

That's pretty awesome, Matt. Your dog has a new friend...or foe. May not be sure which one, yet :) Do the "gear" wheels get enhanced grip on the carpet? They look pretty awesome, for sure. Chris

They grip really well on carpet. Also well on rocks surprisingly. Works best on grass though where the spikes grip into the surface roots.

#52940 New book: Netduino Home Automation Projects

Posted by roguemat on 26 September 2013 - 06:54 PM in General Discussion

I bought your book, given the table of contents, but I'm a bit disappointed with the sparse quantity of content given the price tag that Packt Publishing put on the book. I'll try to do my part and submit my list of errata back to the publisher page for you though. Here's your picture requested for now:

Thanks for the purchase and pic!
Since initial discussions with the publisher this book was made to be a "cookbook". Basically, it will give you a list of things you need, then tell you what to do to get the result. Just like a food recipe it won't go into detail about the theories behind electronics etc. This was also reaffirmed by the strict page number restrictions I had to fit in with.
I have no clue why the book is the price it is - I feel that they should have maybe been 2/3 or half the price. But I also do not have a clue about how much this stuff costs them :P

#52366 Using the LM1830N with Netduino

Posted by roguemat on 26 August 2013 - 02:34 PM in Netduino Plus 2 (and Netduino Plus 1)

This isn't an answer to your question, but rather an alternative solution to detecting water level: http://www.ebay.com/...=item5659ebc4c9

These sensors are cheap and work really well with the Netduino or standalone. Although, if you just need to detect water at certain levels this is overkill.

Thanks a lot guys!

Would be cool if you could post a picture of the physical copy if any of you got that version - because I've never seen a print version. Mine only come in a few weeks :(

Packt: http://www.packtpub....-lazy-boys/book (note that the info here is not up to date)

The target audience is people that know the basics of the platform but don't know where to go from there. That being said, the first chapter does go over how to get VS setup, and how to blink an LED.

#49164 Beam me up: Directional laser with Windows Phone and Netduino

Posted by roguemat on 07 May 2013 - 01:07 PM in Project Showcase

That's funny, I did recently did the exact same thing but I was using a XBox gamepad to move the servos. Also, I used sticky putty instead of rubber bands to tie the x and y servos together.

After while the video gets garbles up here so I can only see the beginning but that's probably something local.

How did you get the "sticky" effect showing in the first part of the video - long shutter time or florescent background?

When did you do this? I made this around the 25th Feb. Reason I ask is because this would confirm that theory (grrr, cant remember the name - think its about monkeys) where people get ideas at the same time across the globe  :P

Thats pretty cool. I do pretty much everything with my Windows Phone though :D Have you documented how you read the XBOX controller anywhere? Would be really interested in reading that.

That's just After Effects to simulate a long exposure video so you can see that it does actually draw stuff out.
