Hey Michael,
I think we are heading in the direction. I built a pan tilt but used 200 step stepping motors, attached a laser pointer and took a long exposure photo. The conclusion for me is that i will not get the resolution i need with these motors in a simple pan tilt configuration. If you are mounting a spotlight i assume that you are looking far into the distance, perhaps you may not get the resolution you need either.

Great Information. I picked up a super cheep RC that has no steering but the collection of transistors controlling the forward and reverse from the RX-3 type IC is a great puzzle that i intend to make use of.
So steering will be a spare stepping motor i have. When i out grow my $5 RC ill get back. Thanks
I love your rig Jim. When i get where you are i intend to mount a cam and navigate from the video stream.

Can someone help me as how to wire this (HMC5843)up and a general getting started? It looks simple but I cannot find a thing except for the Honeywell HMC5843 specification.
