In Topic: Faulty Netduino2 Boards

14 May 2015 - 09:59 AM

We're starting to use netduino 2 for our devices too (as a universal digital I/O remoter) and I'll report what happened to us, in the spirit of global knowledge.
In our laboratory, during our custom developed shields test, one netduino 2 became fried. The technician that was making the tests inserted an external connector that carry 12V and 3.3V... inverted. So that 12V came in 3.3V pin of netduino. I don't know what happened at the moment but after that I've checked the board and, obviously, it's unresponsive, only white led turn on (not the blue one) and no communication in USB port. My PC don't see anything anymore, so MFDeploy and netduino update see nothing too (obviously). The ARM chip is becoming very hot when powered but no buzzing sounds. Simply... fried! (our fault, of course)

But now I have a wonderful paperweight  :D

1- It's possible to add an external EEPROM (for a dollar or so) to store data via I2C/SPI on Netduino 2s today

2 - There are a lot of improvements we haven't covered yet too ; more to come :)

3 - Any photos you can share on your project with the N2s? We always love seeing the cool stuff that community members are building with Netduinos!

1 - Yes I know but adding an external EEPROM implies to make a pcb to make a shield with pins. Doing that implies designing PCB + order PCB + mounting components + various time to make and test it. For a small project like this that's too much (we have to stay low with hardware cost and we're in a hurry)

That would be a viable way the day we'll make a pcb and we'll have more volumes than today.

For now 20 N2 for a customer but not repetitive in short times. We'll make a pcb for our own shield with relays, optocouplers to protect I/O and, maybe, EEPROM. We'll use it for a product we're designing but no short times.  -_-

2 - Cannot wait to read about them  ;)

3 - We are still finalizing it. It will not be so cool to see but I'll make photos and send them to you with some description of the project. N2 will open an important italian church's confessional doors... A strange project

I've put "simple storage" on the feature request list.

Great news about netduino 3! I'll consider it certainly for my following industrial projects! I wanted only to give a +1 to the simple storage request. It would be invaluable for me to permanently store some bytes (around 20) to not loose the configuration at reboot. I'm actually using 20 N2 in a project (N2 to keep low the price) so I don't even have a MicroSD to store something in... Isn't there a way to store something permanently today? (I'm actually reconfiguring through serial connection at every reboot but would be far more elegant to store it!)

However thank you for all the improvements of N3!!!  :)

Chris, can you tell us about this feature please?

I'm using 4.3.1 firmware with 4.3 QFE2 sdk but I cannot find any evidence of "Simple Storage". I too have to save 14 bytes between boots with a N2 so I don't even have the SD option...

What is the status of this feature in 4.3.1 firmware? It it's implemented give us a hint to use it...

Thank you in advance.

In Topic: MFDeploy on Netduino 2 FW 4.3.1: cannot deploy! [RESOLVED]

23 April 2015 - 10:46 AM

Thank you Chris for your fast reply,

I've updated my first post. I've tried MFDeploy from SDK 4.2 and effectively I'm going a step further. Now it seems to do what is expected but at last an error is shown complaining about .sig file (please see first post's attached file)

I've tried recreating the hex file with MFDeploy 4.2 with and without the key file: very same result.

I'm out of options...
