First Project - Prototype - Industrial Control

25 September 2013 - 04:51 AM

After building Hello World, Hello World 2, and playing as one must with LEDs, buttons, buzzers, PWM, servos, and more, here is my first real-world project (prototype). It utilizes a Netduino Pro 2, dual 9V/12V power supplies, SD card, ethernet, a Sainsmart four relay board, three magnetic switches, a kill button, four relays, two DPDT relays which will power an industrial DC motor, and is mounted on a piece of Plexiglas. The code is mostly standard, but contains a micro web server handling GET, POST, and AJAX calls.

The gist of the project is basically industrial lift control via HTTP.

Still to do:

Find a 12 gang, individual feed, studded junction block (or whatever they're called).

Wire up the inputs and outputs on the junction block.

Find a solid and supported WiFi shield.

Glue down the DPDT relays.

Use a hairdryer on the wires to shape them a bit.

Various coding enhancements including auth and cookies.

Being that it's my first real project, I'd love to get some feedback.

Learning Resources

25 August 2013 - 10:59 PM

I'm a 15 year software guy who's started playing with a Netduino Plus 2 this weekend... buttons, LEDs, 12V relay board, Ethernet... but I'm running into lots of things I don't know. What are some good resources for learning about...

  • Resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc. and what they do and when they're needed?
  • How a digital meter can help diagnose things like what pins do what on components like a potentiometer or servo?
  • How do I handle a reverse-polarity RGB LED?
  • Why many code sampes use PWM(pin), and my environment (VSE2010, 4.2 SDK) requires four parameters for PWM?
  • What components are compatible with Netduino and how drivers play into this?

I have the two O'Reilly books from Chris Walker and Cuno Pfister, but even there the code sample aren't working (like PWM).

I'm super-excited about what seems like limitless possibilities, just looking for self-learning resources to jumpstart this journey.

(P.S. What would it take to get a smartphone-like board? Touchscreen, microphone, speakers, camera(s), buttons, accelerometers, digital compass, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, significant storage, memory, processing power... in the same form factor? Or perhaps I could flash my Windows Phone with NETMF and the Netduino stuff? ;-))

5V/12V Relay at 30A

16 August 2013 - 09:38 AM

I have been looking for a 5V triggered relay - for a Netduino Pro 2 - that can (pass?) 12V DC at 30 amps. I saw the SainSmart boards, but they are only rated to 10 amps. Any thoughts on where I might find such a relay or relay board? Also, am I asking the right question? :-)

Thanks!

Operating Temperature

28 July 2013 - 08:49 PM

I am exploring an outdoor application of Netduino and saw the low end of the operating temperature at 32F. Does this mean it will not work under 32F? It will break? Operating will be unreliable? I could foresee usage for this application to be, at times, in the negative farenheit range. http://www.currentre.../US/coldest.php
