Thank you for your response. My wires from the 2 Plus to the clock and data pins on the 74HC595 were indeed about 18cm. I don't have a shield that I can use to shorten that to a minimum, but I was able to use some 10 cm wires. With these shorter leads and my clock rate 4000 value, the LEDs still lit correctly based upon the data I passed in the byte arrays. I then reduced the clock rate to Oscar's example of 1000, and the LEDs did not light correctly.

I reported a problem with the N+2 using the SPI configuration you are using. Still waiting for SecretLabs to confirm if this is a bug but if it is then it might explain the random output you are seeing.
