Are you looking for the DB9 connector as a shield?

There is a nice tutorial that explains starting with RS232 on the ND+2:

I'm looking at it for sending some serial messages to a modem through RS232.

Hi Guliano,

we manufactured RS232/RS485 shield for N+ but it is suitable for N+2 too.

COM1: RS485 / RS232, on terminal block.

COM2: RS232TTL / RS232 on DB9

Supply: 9-30 VDC on terminal block

On the shield there are 6 pcs LED for Tx/Rx communication COM1, COM2, ETH, but you can use them for other purposes too.

Regards,

Gyorgy

Hi Gyorgy,

Sorry I missed your post.

As stated in my original post, I am looking for a shield I can mount on TOP of N+2.

I see another cons on the shield your are recommending me and it is having the need of another power source for it.

Anyhow, it might not be suitable for the project I am working on right now but maybe in the future. Please send me the URL where to buy it.

Thank you

Hi Chris,

Hopefully you see this thread :)

I was looking at both the N+ and N+2 boards closely and it seems that I can use the Cute Digi RS232 Shield on top of the N+2 but just wanted to confirm something with you first:

  • I see on the N+2 that between the SD pin and the GND pin there is a blank pin without a name, is that a Aref pin in the N+2 which is the same exact position as in the N+ or not being used at all? If it is not being used at all, I can safely put the Cute Digi RS232 Shield on top of it, right?
  • I also noticed, the N+ has a Aref pin in it but the N+2 has a IOref pin in it, are they the same in both boards or they are for different purposes?

This is a picture of the Cute Digi sitting on top of my N+:

Thank you

Hi Giuliano, The CuteDigi RS-232 shield should work fine. That's what we use here :) The AREF pin on the gen1 Netduinos let you specify the top end of the analog measurement range. If you didn't use the pin, the range was 0.0-3.3V. With Netduino gen2, the AREF is always 3.3V. The header pin--which was rarely used--has been removed. So you can connect it...no worries, it just won't do anything. The IOREF pin on the new boards tells the shield what voltage is used for digital IO, so that shields can conform their signals to the proper voltage. Netduino gen2 doesn't need this for compatibility with legacy shields...it's just there to make sure it works with new shields which require it. Chris

Chris,

Do you know of any RS-232 Netduino/Arduino  shields that also exposes RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR handshaking signals on the DB-9 conector?

Thanks,

Bizhan.

Hi Bizhan, I don't know of any shields that expose all of those, but you could wire up those pins to a separate RS-232 level shifter and build your own RS-232 breakout. The new RS-232 module for Netduino Go will also supports all of the pins when it comes off the assembly line. Chris
