I have been trying to replicate LCARS functionality for years but have never found a "true" application for it other than the novelty of having it. So I finally made the decision I am going to write a home automation system using LCARS.

A little bit of what I want to do:

  • LCARS Interface in each room
  • LCARS "tablet" is linked to each room
  • Voice commands to control room features (lighting, fans, temperature, etc)
  • One room with a pneumatic door with an LCARS PIN pad to open.

The primary automation in each room will be run from an application running on a Windows 7/8 tablet mounted on a wall in each room. The system will have a "central control" web interface that can control any device using a Z-Wave network.

Here are a couple mock ups of the web interface I am making for my home automation system. These panels have no functionality, they are just the UI. This is written completely in CSS3, HTML5, and C#.

The first thing I am going to tackle is the LCARS PIN pad since I think it will be hardest. I am going to do this using a Netduino GO and a touchscreen module from Nwazet.

Here is what I have done so far with the PIN Pad:

I started with AI and Home Automation back in the 90s and have had two homes automated since then. It's fun to play with. When the tablet revolution began, I started working on the next logical step of having tablets installed in many locations to handle interfaces, full house audio, intercom, voice recognition, facial and expression recognition. The core of the system has been .NET based since around 1999-ish when the early beta's of .NET were available. The system can use Z-Wave, X10, etc. to control devices in the house and also has some handy useful voice features like shopping lists, taking quick notes, etc. Because I worked at IBM at the time and needed to maintain a securely locked home office a touch screen keypad was a project I tackled when the Arduino came out back 6-7 years ago. It was a very cool addition to the system. We've been toying with starting a Home Automation company for a few years, but it has kinda remained a hobby for now. Good luck with your project!

Nice idea! I would like to do something similar one day! Look forward to seeing the progress!
