I'm very pleased to announce that the Netduino v4.2 firmware was officially released this morning (simultaneously with the .NET Micro Framework 4.2 QFE2 PK and SDK).

This upgrade is being provided for all Netduino hardware, both the traditional Netduinos and the new Netduino Go.

This exciting new release includes a number of major enhancements over .NET MF 4.1:
  • 50% more RAM for Netduino Plus (42KB vs 28KB)
  • Visual Basic support
  • New WinUSB drivers (for those who had ocassional BSODs)
  • StringBuilder and other new classes
  • New core AnalogInput and PWM classes
  • Garbage collector bugfixes
  • More bugfixes; see netmf.codeplex.com
Users are welcomed to upgrade to their boards to .NET Micro Framework 4.2 at the time of their choice. The new SDK supports both 4.1 and 4.2 projects, so you will be able to use both boards with the same SDK. We will continue supporting users on both versions for the time being.

Instructions and downloads:
NETMF and Netduino 4.2 SDK Upgrade

Netduino v4.2.0 RTM firmware
Netduino Plus v4.2.0 RTM firmware
Netduino Mini v4.2.0 RTM firmware

The downloads, including all the source code, are also available on the Downloads page.

One final note: .NET MF 4.2 includes new AnalogInput and PWM classes. You can continue using the legacy SecretLabs AnalogInput and PWM classes by importing the new SecretLabs.NETMF.Hardware.Analog.dll and SecretLabs.NETMF.Hardware.PWM.dll assemblies. You will need to use the fully qualified "namespace + class name" notation. More information is available on the SDK Upgrade post.

Please let us know how the new software works for you!

Thank you for belonging to the Netduino community,

Chris

Christmas has come early! Now to come up with some BSOD test cases :) Thanks Chris, and great work getting these Netduino updates out for us right along side of the long awaited release of .NET MF 4.2 RTM (QFE2). Kudos! Steve

One quick note: We will also have a QFE2 update for Netduino Go (using the WinUSB drivers). Netduino Go is receiving some updates to support the new SD and Ethernet modules--and is already running RTM firmware--so it's on a slightly different release schedule.

Hi Alex,

Care to share when will the >2G SD being integrated for 4.2? Any schedule?

There were some fairly significant code changes in the SD code for .NET MF 4.2. It should support newer cards, but the reality is that we'll likely need to analyze and update the firmware to support various cards.

If you have a card which doesn't work with .NET MF 4.2, please let us know the make and the model of your card. We'll try to get one here and test against it...and then where possible upload a firmware patch. KodeDaemon will likely be doing quite a bit of this, as he is our resident SD expert...so we'll have to start stocking up on pizza and thank you cards now :)

Hi Erik,

We're working with CW2 on this one. It's a bit of a project, but we hope to have something to share soon :)
