It's probably a case of you get what you pay for, but can someone explain the difference between the ENC28J60 and Wiznet 5100?
What do I get from a $46 Arduino Shield that I won't get from an $18 ENC28J60 module?
I tried reading the datasheets, but it's in Greek (or may as well be):

http://www.sparkfun....heet_v1_1_6.pdf
At $3 for a DIP module, this chip would be very affordable for stand-alone projects. Anyone working on a library for the ENC28J60?
Speaking of stand-alone projects, is there a cheaper DIP version of the Netduino chip?

Hi hari,
The Arduino shield uses the Wiznet chip--which is basically a full TCP/IP stack and interface on the chip. You just read/write data from the Netduino...it takes care of all the actual networking.
The ENC28J60 solutions are basically just Ethernet interface chips. You need to take care of all the networking on the Netduino itself. This is theoretically possible using a networking stack on the ARM chip. We're looking at possible solutions along these lines...
On the $3 DIP of the ENC chip... You'd still need to add a set of magnetics, an Ethernet jack, and more to make that work. But it would be a lot of fun

Seems like a W5100 shield is on sale here: http://www.cutedigi....bc9c59543fa42cf ($25)

Right now Cutedigi has them for sale for $25. http://www.cutedigi....1ea707987da5b4.
You can also use the Wiznet module which has everything on it for about $25 as well, which is what I'm using to prototype it.

And a lot more pins ...

You don't need to connect any more pins then the shield uses. You just have to wire it up yourself. The module can be used either in bus mode, or SPI.
