There is a nice SD card with embedded WiFi called Eye-Fi (home page). It seems to operate as follows:

1. You install a service on your PC that is on your home network.
2. You configure the Eye-Fi card to connect to your network.
3. You take pictures with your camera.
4. When the Eye-Fi card is on your network, it connects to the service and transfers files.

Wow. This is very cool. I would like to repurpose this into a general data transfer system for the Netduino. Has anyone done this before?

Hi Bob

Thanks for the morning diversion!

Hmmm, since the Netduino is so new and in limited circulation right now, not much chance someone else has your same interest. There is a lot of hacking discussions on the net, but the hacks are related to the wireless side of not using their external service.

Logically the product looks to function in the following process:

1. Cammera takes picture and writes it to SD card.
2. Wireless processor chip detects directory change.
3. Contacts destination and writes file.

Doesn't appear to be anything two way about it and even if you could replace the firmware it looks like you would still have to use file level mailboxs.

IMHO it would be better to spend the money on a direct interface wifi or bluetooth.

When I read your article on the GPS truck tracking system, I thought about how you might be able to use the Eye-Fi to easily transfer the data logs to your "server" as you arrived into the driveway. Just thoughts as I don't have one to prototype with. If you do get one, you might find that you would need to name your logs with a "jpg" extension so the Eye-Fi transfers the files.

Has any one done any testing with this yet?

I was wondering if it could be hacked for general wifi use, but the one way thing makes sense I suppose. I've added a micro SD card to a Netduino. All I needed was a breakout board and the Netduino's SPI interface (along with latest 4.1.1 firmware) did the rest. I'd expect that an Eye-Fi card for file transfer should be similar.
