A bit of history? Sure thing.
We think that open source hardware is pretty fantastic and we had been working with .NET Micro Framework for a number of years. When Microsoft decided to make it open source, we thought that open hardware was the perfect marriage with open software.
The Arduino team has done a lot of great things for the community, and one of the results of the popularity of the Arduino hardware is that there are a ton of Arduino shields out there. So when we made our first open source board, we thought it would be great idea to make it compatible with those shields and help promote those open source hardware manufacturers.
Plus, we're helping promote the Arduino project and all open source generally. Rising tides lift all boats, and the interest in true open-source solutions from the C# community has been really heartwarming.
BTW, welcome to the community!

Exactly. I bought an Arduino after I got my Netduino just to see what all the fuss was about!
