Hi :) Sparkfun is carrying those: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9519 With a lot of distributors: http://www.sparkfun.com/distributors If a local distributor doesn't has it on his website you could try to contact them. They probably still can get it for you. Conrad has got them as well: http://www.conrad.de...C-74-HC-165-DIP I'm not sure what it would do with the 166 actually :)

Hello Dops. I guess your distributor is telling something wrong. The 166 is almost obsolete, instead the 165 is still in production. Refer the sheet. However, they are pretty similar and you may buy it anyway: the hardware wiring differences are minimal. Are you living in Italy? If so, there's plenty of places where to buy without great overcost. Cheers
Biggest fault of Netduino? It runs by electricity.

For most applications it should not matter (regarding synchronous/asynchronous). If it's local, just pick one up and see if it works for you (if i recall correctly what stefan's class does, it should work exactly the same as long as inputs don't change during readout)
I believe that no discovery of fact, however trivial, can be wholly useless to the race, and that no trumpeting of falsehood, however virtuous in intent, can be anything but vicious.
