OK, dummy question of the day... I plugged an higher amp motor onto a lower amp motor shield when I turn say Traxxas T12 550 into a DFRobot shield L293B (I know I shouldn't have done that, but I was curious if I can operate the motor as really low speed. so more or less as I expected....the shield got really hot and smoke comes up from the L293B chip..... definitely something burned inside.... now when swapped with a smaller motor, the motor still can operate....so my question is what actually burned, if the chip was burned, why it still work? :-) was it just the plastic part of the IC got burn or there was something else that got grilled? Thanks!!!

The chip is most likely in a plastic package (I don't know that chip). The chip got hot enough to get the plastic to start smoking. You are extremely lucky that the chip still works, however, there is most certainly damage done to the chip. The chip will not perform to rated spec anymore and will not last as long as it should and will most probably get hotter a lot quicker on your next dangerous attempt.
