Hi all,

I'm looking for a good summer side project, I've been looking at the netduino and fez-panda.
Atm i'm leaning towards the Netduino, but I have a couple of questions:

  • The site is a bit confusing, the hardware link brings you to the adruino page, but there's no where to go to the adruino plus page, and no comparisons of the two. So how many adruino hardwares are there?
  • I have 0 embedded hardware experience, though I do have a Masters in CS (particularly software technology). As such I'm more interrested in rewritting the software OS of the netduino then actually just using the netduino. (for educational reasons, but I would like a NETCF capabile board.)
  • I also need networking components, particularly wifi. If I would to get a netduino plus, which wifi shield do you guys recommend?
  • And an LCD?

Regards,
Phyx

Hi Phyx, For more info on the Netduino Plus, visit the following page: http://www.netduino.com/netduinoplus/ Netduino Plus is like a regular Netduino...plus integrated Ethernet and MicroSD features. We haven't done any WiFi projects, so I'll leave that question for other community members to pitch in on... Welcome to the Netduino community, Chris

Before I started with my Netduino board, I pretty much had zero embedded experience. But in fairly short order I've gained a lot of valuable experience w/ both the .NET Microframework and designing simple circuits.

If you have any interest in that side of things, any of the Arduino proto-shields would work great. I picked up mine from Sparkfun.

  • And an LCD?

For an LCD, there are probably a dozen ways to skin that cat. With cost being inversely related to complexity. On the cheap side, you can pickup a 24x2 LCD for a couple of bucks. But it will require a lot of work (both in circuitry and code). For about US $25, you can get a serial LCD from Sparkfun. That will only require 1 pin from the Netduino (pin D0).

Hope this helps!

Hi Chris, Dan, Thanks for the reply, Both gave valuable information, I've looked at the SparkFun site, I think I'll first try to find a company from within Europe that ships the LCD you linked to dan (save on import fees). Now I just need a hint on a Wifi shield and I'm golden :) Regards, Phyx

I don't know where in Europe you are, but Sparkfun has a pretty extensive distributor list
