Hello All,
This project is still in progress, but my son and I completed our first pass on testing the code so I wanted to go ahead and post it and will update it with the final code and build of materials as I complete them. The details for the project are at http://jarrodsinclair.wordpress.com/.

Here is the main timer:

Video I posted on my blog regarding the testing (EDIT: Sorry about the quality):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXiUx43sbdU

I don't have the cover on the timer yet. It came with a black one but I didn't like it so I am making one out of Lexan. Also the wires are sitting on my bench cause I am still working on the aluminium frame that will hold the IR LEDs and Photo Transistors. There are a buch of other pics, process diagrams, drawings, and video of this build at http://jarrodsinclair.wordpress.com/ where I am building a project page with detailed information on the build.

Reminded me I can across an e-ink display the other day.

On Friday I finished the Mechanical portion of the build and this weekend I met up with the guy building the Track and we tested both together for the first time. It was a success!!!

HI Jarrod!

Ever wondered what it would be like to ride one of them cars of yours?

Well, now you can, all thanks to me introducing the all new "in-car race cam" Posted Image Check it out!

Proportional speed is probably well in excess of 200 mph. Imagine what adding music and a using a wider lense could do...

Enjoy!

HI all,

I have finally updated the build in my blog: http://jarrodsinclai...nd-source-code/

Here is the relevant info from the Blog post:

Well it has been busy the last few months, but I finally freed up enough time to add the design documents for the Grand Prix Timer to the build page on my Blog and add the source code to a new Codeplex project. With these items you should be able to build your own after doing a little homework.
Note: All the design documents I have created are now uploaded. However if you have any questions please let me know and I will add details where needed.

Also for those that want to see the final setup in operation here is the video of its completed operation:

Well there is new life for this project. Over the last couple of weeks I have been talking with some friends and I came up with a new use for the Netduino controller. It is a quiz machine (think Jeopardy). Not sure yet if it will be a 4 or 8 person device but each participant will have a trigger and then when a question is asked the first person to trigger it will get to answer. I am hoping to use the controller with no hardware changes but just build a different device to plug into it and provide the triggers for the players. Then do an LED at each station that shows which one was clicked first. Next week I'll be working out the hardware design and then getting the parts, then I'll do the code changes over Christmas and New Years. for the trigger I was going to do a short piece of PVC with end caps and then a trigger at the top for the press. Then a LED that will sit on the table in front of them (2 actually, 1 pointing forward and 1 pointing backwards). All of this coming to a collector that would host the 2 Ethernet cables going back to the controller. If you have any ideas about howto make this better please let me know.

Hi Jarrod, Oh, that would be cool. In high school, I was on the scholastic bowl team and the buzzer system was a prized possession :) Maybe we could also hook up IBM Watson as a direct node on that system? Chris

Buzzers on quiz machines.

How about making each team / persons buzzer make a different sound.

Regards,
Mark

Hi All,

Know I haven't been very active in the Forums for the last couple of years but this project still sees alot of traffic on my Blog and I help a handful of people build them ever year. Normally this is not a big deal because I have down the most common issues and have tried to keep the project page up to date. However there is a guy in Puerto Rico that is trying to build a modified version of my timer and I have been trying to help him through the build but his English is not very strong and my Spanish is non-existent  :). Is there anyone out there they might be willing to give this guy a hand and translate?

BTW - here is their track:
