Quick Summary up front.
1) What support is available for serial modbus (rs-232 for either RTU or ASCII at a baud of 1200-115200) (any libraries or supported shields?)
2) Is the netduino up for being used in a production environment? (Is it considered reliable as a device if locked in a cabinet with a PLC brick and various relays / solenoids?) What kind of maintenance can be expected over extended run time period? (I understand that this is an awesome open source project and we could possible use the netduino as a prototype initially).
3) Are their any other embedded devices supporting a c# development environment worth looking into.
Looks like you have a great community, and perhaps I can contribute in the future. I already plan on getting a netduino to play around with for hobby purposes for myself after having taken a brief look around at the site and some youtube videos (I'm actually excited about the tinkering and am trying to come up with projects for fun). But for my current problem, it's for a production solution with a unique requirement.
I've been contacted by a company that needs to replace a device in their stores, and they want the code delivered to be written in c# as a unique requirement by their support/audit staff. The device will communicate with Koyo Click PLC devices to perform various automation task, and they want to be able to interact with it using a web browser. I saw lots of interesting projects and libraries that have already been developed demonstrating the netduino as a sufficient "web server". But I saw some questionable answers when it came to the rs-232 communication on some of the netduino devices. What's the skinny here?
