This is an SDK only updated release (e.g. porting kit and firmware don't change). The major highlights are:

  • Updated SDK to support use with Visual Studio 2013 (and experimental support for Visual Studio "14")
  • Split SDK installer from Visual Studio support. The SDK MSI now installs only the tools, and reference assemblies (like the desktop versions). A separate VSIX package installs to each supported version of Visual Studio to complete the installation. VSIX packages are available here, as well as from the Visual Studio Extensions Gallery accessible directly from VS.
  • Since VS integration is on a per version basis, this new model also supports simultaneous installations of multiple VS versions.

Thanks for the heads-up CW2!

For those of us who have already installed the experimental VS2013 tooling from SecretLabs, do we now need to uninstall it or can these distributions exist side by side?

Take care,

Nathan

So this is a SDK release for integrating with newer Visual Studio versions? So the NETMF code for the boards is still the same?

Hi CW2,

You are so fast at posting things! :)

A few notes on the new NETMF 4.3.1 SDK beta release...

1. If you have a previous version of the .NET Micro Framework SDK installed (experimental or official), simply uninstall that version via "Control Panel > Programs and Features" before installing the new 4.3.1 beta SDK release.
2. We also recommend uninstalling the Netduino SDK before installing any new NETMF SDKs...and then reinstalling the Netduino SDK afterwards. This will ensure that your project templates and similar links don't disappear.
3. This SDK release is just for Visual Studio. No firmware updates are required. There are some firmware updates coming too, but we'll address those shortly and separately.
4. With the new .NET MF SDK, you can use multiple versions of Visual Studio side-by-side--so you no longer need to target the latest version of Visual Studio. This will be great for developers using computers at corporations.

We've been collaborating with the NETMF team for a long time on this release and some other big items that will be coming this fall. Tons of kudos to them.

Stay tuned for a few more major NETMF-related announcements this autumn :)

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the instructions.

I've followed your points -> Uninstall NETMF SDK -> Uninstall Netduino SDK -> Install NETMF SDK -> Install Netduino SDK.

Unfortunately, however, I can no longer see any Netduino project templates when creating a new project. I've tried rebooting a couple of times, but to no avail. Do you know what tooling I might be missing from SecretLabs?

Take care,

Nathan

Hi Nathan,

The release Netduino SDK does target VS 2012 or VS2012 or VS2013, depending on which version you install. Can you double-check and make sure you're installing the respective SDK?

We are looking at ways to integrate via VSIX in future SDK installers, but at the moment we're sticking with the single-step SDK installer .MSI.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply.

The SDK that I uninstalled was "netduinosdk_vs2013_experimental.exe". The SDK that I installed (following the new NETMF SDK) was "netduinosdk_NETMF43.exe".

Should I now uninstall the latter and reinstall the former?

Take care,

Nathan

Hi Nathan,

Yes. The regular SDK targets VS2012. The experimental SDK for VS2013 targets VS2013.

We're looking at making an installer which targets both, after the new NETMF SDK comes out of beta. In the meantime, just pick which version of VS you want to use...and you're good to go :)

Hi FourT2,

We may be able to roll out 4.3.2 to Netduino 1. Netduino Plus 1 is troublesome due to the small amount of flash/RAM available for lwIP.

Right now our focus is on getting 4.3.2 onto Netduino 2, Netduino Plus 2 and also Netduino Go.

A roll-out of 4.3.2 for Netduino 1 would be awesome. I have about thirty of those now I think...

Chris, that would be awesome if you guys could pull it off and update N+, to breathe new life into this awesome product. I have a couple of those.

Just in case someone else has the problem with this new SDK.

I had an Error: a3000000 when I tried to debug an existing solution.

The solution was to remove all References in the project and add them again.

Hi I am using MS visual studio 2013 and I have a problem with setting up Netduino framework. I installed micro fw (http://visualstudiog...f1-e8cb6e10f239) according to instructions above as well as netduino sdk (http://www.netduino....bit_NETMF42.exe) but entering VS i can not see that fw and sdk. What are other options?

Hi CrossUp,

The Netduino 4.2 SDK requires an earlier version of Visual Studio. Grab the Netduino 4.3 SDK for VS2013 ("experimental") and you should be good to go.

Welcome to the Netduino community,

Chris

Thanks for advice, I already got 2012 version of VS and now everything works just great.
