I was wondering what the communities thoughts are on having the .Net Microframework supported on the Intel Quark (Galileo) and if there are already plans for this support?

 

 

 

If not, then what would it take to push forward with this?

How about Intel Edison? The support Arduino on this too.

Hi shiv.kumar,

There's an x86 port of NETMF in the emulator. You might be able to hack that to work on the Intel chips, although you'd lose some of the benefits of the lower-power ARM micros.

NETMF is designed for Cortex-M class, low-cost processors. The Cortex-A and low-end x86 chips are generally used for PC-class motherboards which run higher-end operating systems (with much higher power consumption, higher flash and RAM requirements, higher component counts driving up assembly cost, etc.)

I met with Intel and talked about potentially using their chips on future Netduino boards a while ago. Right now those low-end x86 chips are just too expensive and power-hungry compared to ARM technology. I do love the direction they're going though; hopefully in a few years Intel will have something in the Cortex-M class (versus Cortex-A).

My expectation is that Galileo and Edison will soon be running a variant of Windows Embedded with a more robust .NET variant, not MicroFramework.
