What would be a reasonable expectation of top speed for a stepper motor, in terms of steps per second (or seconds per step, if you prefer!). I guess the answer is probably "it depends" (isn't it always?) but I don't have any sense of what is reasonable so I just need an injection of common sense and reason. If there isn't a straight answer, what are the factors that come into play in determining the top speed?

I currently have a NEMA 17 and I'm planning to microstep it and use acceleration to get it up to speed. I'm using the Adafruit motor board (the old one not the new one).

Thanks,

Tim Long
