All,

Netduino is an excellent prototyping platform.  However, doing any thing useful may require 4 or 5 shields.

Has anyone taken a completed design to a  solid state foundry and had it shrunk to a single chip?

If so, how much should I expect this step to cost for 5-6 shields for 1,000 -> 10,000 copies?  Any recommended

foundries?

Thanks,

Milt

Hi Milt, We prototyped AGENT and several other products, using Netduino. Our commercial customers do this as well. Netduino is great for hobby purposes--but it's also designed for commercial prototyping. Enjoy the freedom of open source. Combining all the discrete parts onto one board...that's very doable. Sometimes it makes sense for very small runs but usually you're looking at 1,000+ or 10,000+ units before building custom boards makes sense. As far as taking a full design and reducing it to a single custom IC...that's a different ballgame. Typically we wouldn't consider custom silicon unless we were building millions of something. Chris

Hi Chris,

We may very well be talking about millions.

Thanks,

Milt

Hi Milt, If you're talking about millions and don't want to become your own fabless chip design house, I would call ST or TI or Atmel. The fabs may also have resources for you--although we typically prefer to work with the above firms when it comes to custom silicon. Chris
