Hello,

I managed to create a light flashing program in response to pressing the on-board button. Woo!

Now I'm trying to perform a simple GET request, but for some reason I seemed to have hit a brick wall connecting to my local network..

When I plug in my Ethernet wire into Netduino Plus 1 (powered from USB), no network lights turn on or even flicker... neither on the hub/router or those 3 little lights next to the Ethernet port.

Do I have to turn networking on? Either from MFDeploy, in code or a perhaps event a tiny switch on the board?

Does this typically indicate I have a broken board?

Do the lights only light up when the network is in use?

I find my code crashes when it attempts to open a socket.

4.1 firmware is on the board.

Appreciate any hints - I'm a programmer but this is my first journey into electronics so be kind :)

Many thanks,

Dan.

Hi Dan, Open up MFDeploy, connect to your board (USB transport) and then select "Device Capabilities" from the Target menu. What firmware edition (Netduino/Netduino Plus) and version appear? If you're running Netduino Plus firmware and your Ethernet LEDs aren't lighting up then you most likely have a bad network cable (or a powered-off port on the router). If that's not the issue, then your Netduino Plus may have gotten damaged somehow. :( Did you just buy this NP1? We test every board (including network tests on Netduino Plus) before they leave Secret Labs...but things occasionally get damaged in transit, etc. If it's a new board, and it's an issue with the board, then let's make sure we get you a new board as a warranty replacement. Chris

Hi Chris,
Firstly, thank you for your quick reply!
I have included some info from MFDeploy at the base of this e-mail and I hope this answers your query regarding framework edition and version.
It would appear to be using the “Netduino Plus” firmware on the device (not just “Netduino” firmware).
After trying numerous network cables and ports, I then tried the network cable from my working NAS box (good wire, active network port).  Still no luck.
I also tried holding down the on-board button while inserting the USB wire, then connecting it to the network just in case the application itself was causing an issue.
Presuming I’ve not missed any other scenario where networking wouldn’t be activated, then I defer to your conclusion of a possible damaged board.
I bought this as a birthday gift some time ago for a family member on 27th November 2011 via Amazon (Seller: Crazy Daisy) and with the exception of a single use (a simple flashing light application), it has since sat in a box and contained within its anti-static bag in my home.  I have re-claimed this device for my own purposes (home brew/greenhouse monitoring), and so this is the first time networking has been attempted with this Netduino Plus 1.
In all likelihood the warrantee will have expired, but I do believe that the device has arrived with this issue.  The gift recipient is also a programmer and far more electronics aware than I am (i.e. unlikely to be user damage).  Since I purchased the board for use over a network, it is not currently fit for purpose.
I would appreciate your advice.
Note: I am based in the UK (Scotland) thus reply times may be a little off.
Best wishes, Dan.

Hi danabdn, The company (Crazy Daisy) you bought from isn't one of our resellers...interesting. I wonder if you maybe got a used board? You have PM :) Chris
